Withdrawal is more likely if you have used zolpidem for a long time or in high doses. Tell your doctor or pharmacist right away if you have withdrawal. It’s unlikely you’ll become dependent on zolpidem (Ambien). This new recommendation has been added to the Warnings and Precautions section of the physician label and to the patient Medication Guide for zolpidem extended-release (Ambien CR).

Some research suggests that Ambien may be harmful to a developing fetus and increase the risk of low birth weight, preterm delivery, and cesarean delivery. Over time, Ambien abuse and addiction affect every aspect of a person’s life, from physical health to emotional wellbeing and the quality of family relationships. Addiction can separate spouses, parents, and children by establishing an atmosphere of dishonesty and distrust at home. Rebuilding an atmosphere of support, trust, and safety in the home is one of the primary goals of family therapy, a key component of any comprehensive rehab program. It’s possible to do these things and have no memory of them later.

Do not take this medicine if you have drank alcohol the same evening or just before bedtime. Ambien and Ambien CR should only be taken if you have at least 7–8 hours before you need to wake up. If you miss taking your dose before bedtime, skip the missed dose. Do not crush, chew, or split Ambien CR tablets, as this can affect how the drug works. You’ll swallow Ambien or Ambien CR by mouth just before bedtime.

Drugs & Supplements

The recommended dose of AMBIEN in these patients is 5 mg once daily immediately before bedtime. Avoid AMBIEN use in patients with severe hepatic impairment as it may contribute to encephalopathy [see Warnings and Precautions (5.8), Use in Specific Populations (8.7), Clinical Pharmacology (12.3)]. AMBIEN (zolpidem tartrate) is indicated for the short-term treatment of insomnia characterized by difficulties with sleep initiation. AMBIEN has been shown to decrease sleep latency for up to 35 days in controlled clinical studies [see Clinical Studies (14)]. Dosage is based on your gender, age, medical condition, other medications you may be taking, and response to treatment.

How Long Does Ambien Withdrawal Last?

Zolpidem may cause serious or possibly life-threatening sleep behaviors. Some people who took zolpidem got out of bed and drove their cars, prepared and ate food, had sex, made phone calls, sleep-walked, or were involved in other activities while not fully awake. After they woke up, these people were unable to remember what they had done. Tell your doctor if you have ever had an unusual sleep behavior while taking zolpidem.

Coadministration with other CNS depressants (e.g., benzodiazepines, opioids, tricyclic antidepressants, alcohol) increases the risk of CNS depression [see Drug Interactions (7.1)]. Dosage adjustments of AMBIEN and of other concomitant CNS depressants may be necessary when AMBIEN is administered with such agents because of the potentially additive effects. The use of AMBIEN with other sedative-hypnotics (including other zolpidem products) at bedtime or the middle of the night is not recommended [see Dosage and Administration (2.3)].

Ambien Description

Both benzodiazepines and zolpidem (Ambien) are thought to enhance the effects of a specific neurotransmitter called GABA. However, Ambien only induces sleep whereas benzodiazepines also work as anticonvulsants and muscle relaxants.
